I found it easer to upload to Smashwords than I did to Kindle. Has anyone else had that experience? www.smashwords.com/

I haven't uploaded there anything yet (waiting for my man to come up with the cover. While he, being a real artist, waiting in his turn for Muse to arrive, and the damn deity doesn't show up (for almost two weeks since I first asked ) But in the thread from AW, you've linked, there were some people complaining and some very satisfied. I really can't wait to do it!!! Did they give you free ISBN? (I'm counting on that )

Yes, they do give you a free ISBN, Zoe. However, they have run out of them at the moment. They expect to have more (50,000) in about a week.

Thank you, Lily!!! Btw, it WAS as smooth and easy as you said. But Amazon baffles me. I gave up yesterday night. So many steps and so much frighteningly tough worded agreements to accept. Try again this morning

What I also like about Smashwords, Zoe, is the way you can make changes in your book after it's published and they take effect immediately. Whereas Kindle takes some 24 to 48 hours to make the change.

When you sign on with Smashwords, do you need a paypal account, or is there another way to receive payments.

From Smashwords Payee Page:
"Payment options - We have two payment options. For residents of the US, payment is made either via paper check or Paypal. For residents outside the US, payment is made via PayPal only.
Payment thresholds - The threshold for paper checks is $75.00. The threshold for PayPal is only $10.00. We encourage all authors to sign up for a free PayPal account so you can receive electronic payments. "

Thanks Lily.
I converted my pdf to a word doc and it just didn't come out too well.
I will probably just have my editor format it for kindle.

I uploaded my out-of-contract titles to both Smashwords and Kindle. The formatting can be a challenge until you get the hang of it. But it really is doable. I found Smashwords easier.

they recommend what they call a "nuclear method". You just copy-paste your document into a notepad, then pasting it back into a new word doc. This way you get rid of anything unnecessary like headers and footers and styles. It worked a magic for me (a total newbie for anything technical ) The Smash style guide is really REALLY detailed

Yay, I'm on the both now too <com'on guys, the first round of drinks on me> Standing there and wondering 'what's now?' Do you have hot tips for some sort of an aggressive marketing? I'm such a newbie to all this...
