"Eight women who say they were duped into forming long-term loving relationships with undercover policemen have started legal action against police chiefs, alleging that they have suffered intense emotional trauma and pain. The women say the men "deliberately and knowingly deceived" them into forming intimate relationships of up to nine years by concealing their real identities. They say the men, who had been sent to infiltrate protest groups, were using them "physically and emotionally" to obtain intelligence about those campaigns." www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/dec/16/lovers-undercover-officers-sue-police

Man that is just sick. I understand the police side of things... and it's a trick as old as law its self but... I can imagine the heartbreak these ladies feel too. No one is a winner here, I am sure the undercover police men had to force themselves to like these ladies in the begining but I fear that in some cases they may have even felt something real later...
What a shame.

This is a pretty odd case on all fronts. Why did the police deem it necessary to infiltrate the groups in the first place, and to continue doing so for so many years? One would assume -- and as a taxpayer hope -- that this surveillance was producing some sort of positive results.
As for the officers who slept with the women. I doubt that they were told to do so by their Chiefs. I believe this is an absolute no no when it comes to undercover work. However, even if they were, the Chiefs are going to deny, deny, deny, and I doubt that any of the officers, assuming they want to hang onto their jobs, will say otherwise.
So what it boils down to is the individual officers being sued for lying about who they really were. Now this opens a huge can of very unruly worms. The lawyers will be rubbing their hands in glee as they foresee half the country, both women and men, suing each other for lying.
"Your Honour, he didn't tell me he was married." "Your Honour, she said the child was mine but a DNA test proved it isn't."
And on and on and on.... ;D
