There seems to be fewer publishing opportunities. For instance, on the Paying Markets board on Absolute Write there used to be new calls for submissions every day. But that's not been the case for quite a while now. I guess that's another reason so many authors are choosing to self publish.

It seems you already have to be a celebrity in order to get anything out there.

I suppose it all depends how much time one is willing to invest querying and being rejected. The odds are huge against a new writer today. Not to be negative, but even if they beat the odds and get a good agent, there's still only a 50/50 chance that the agent will find a publisher. And even if s/he does, it may not be one of the big ones. Therefore, the sales are likely to be disappointing.
However, even if it is a major New York house, unless they really give the book the big push when it comes to promotion, it's not likely to do that well either, and will end up remaindered by the bookstores in just 3 short weeks. Covers torn off and recycled. So much for years and years of hard work. There is about as much chance of writing a best seller as there is of winning the big prize in the lottery.

Excellent link, Richard, and all (sadly) so very true.
