I couldn't "second" this strongly enough. Today, the legacy approach to publishing just isn't that way to go. Today, one self-publishes and becomes successful, and if they do, they may get a good deal when a larger publisher offers to buy them out. But of course, if they have a readership and they are successful, why get bought out? Why not just self-publish.
