Ya' know, Lily, I suppose we're all supposed to be helpful, supportive and aiding our fellow writers in the pursuit of great literature.
I do use the word "suppose."
But isn't it understandable to find an underdog who just snaps and strikes back?
Due to current events, we demonize the the loner/loser when the situation is far out of control. We put a bandage on the problem with in-school seminars on bullying. Some utilizing sock-puppets and role playing. Sheez.
There's a visceral response to get even--in fact, more than even.
The solution to the story is not the splashy headline about a distressed kid and shotgun blast. Where were the concerned citizens and responsible journalists when the bullies inflicted violence on him?

There are so many tragedies that could be prevented if someone in authority would just DO something! But oh no, they wait until a victim gets so desperate that he takes matters into his own hands. You can't fault this kid. Heck I can understand how he felt. There is a certain poetic justice here. Maybe if more bullies met this fate they'd think twice before tormenting their victims.
Bullying is something so innate to human nature that we're never going to stop it. Bullies are not only found in the school yard. They're in the work place, they're family members, they're neighbours. Avoidance is the best policy but (as in the case of school) it's not always possible.
Humans are an ugly species, alien to the earth and all the other creatures in it. Which, they're well on the way to destroying completely. It's little wonder that they hate and gang up on each other as well. And despite all this unpleasantness and problems the "loner" i.e. the person who has the sense to stay as far away from other humans as possible, (what else can one do?) is vilified as a "loner" and "weirdo." Incredible!

In a Clint Eastwood movie, his character guns down an unarmed man. When notified of this, Clint responses, "Well, he should have armed himself."
Despite my history (and lots of my present) I'm still just a 62 year old schlepp, baptized Christian, and a guy whose big thrill for the day is going to the gym and then a coffee bar.
However, when I slide my pants on for today (and get rid of these twin girls--whoever they are) I will be carrying a Buck 112 Ecolite, a ZT0300, and I think a SIG Sauer Diamond Plate P238.
I'm the jokester, remember?
But the world is changing. I believe people are responsible for their own security. And trust me, no one is taking my Oreo Cookies today.
Having said that, do you really think this boy is going to get a fair trial, or just cuffed and stuffed and slapped into a prison psych ward?

I think it's already a miscarriage of justice that he's being tried as an adult. He is NOT an adult. I guess they think by making an example of him, it will discourage other bullying victims from giving their tormentors a taste of their own bitter medicine. Won't work though.

As you know, one of my collaborators is also Canukian. She seems to bristle occasionally at the mundane way I dress to leave the house. I have better stuff than the RCMP.
But I see no other alternative. If you are going to create a society composed of silly hate speech, affirmative action where excellence is not a determining factor, where adrenaline trumps The Constitution, and where Casy Anthony has to hide despite being innocent until proven guilty, then my only recourse is our 2A.
I got into a jam circa 1978 when some woman went to human resources because I wouldn't take any of her shiit. The real issue was that I was a better debater, her postulates were puerile and my rebuttals dismantled her whining.
I told the HR guy, "If you want me to quit defending, then quit attacking."

I know its not PC but I can't help but feel these punks had it coming. I've noticed those who love to dish it can't seem to take it. You are now speaking to the Grand Vizier of Politically Incorrect. And who cares? Will I get hate mail from Gloria Allred? I mean, more than usual... The guy pushed the victim, the victim shot back. Looks like cause and effect to me. The people who should be ashamed, blamed and prosecuted are the limp wrists who let the tail wag the dog. Like the NRA rep said on camera today, "The way you stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy and a gun."Some people need to get shot. I mean, you don't have to buy a varmint license or anthing. There's no bag limit.
