I've heard lyrics that are poetic and poetry that is lyrical. It's a fine line we walk.
If my baby speaks to me then I will love it even if you think she's an ugly brute.
If I want you to love my baby then I'll have to beat it with you in mind.
The Ignorant masses are called that for a reason. If you speak too high above them or in a language that's just your own; it will leave your pockets empty and your belly full.
I used to hear songs on the radio that were neither lyrical or poetic sung by people who have won awards for there songs. I no longer listen to the radio.
The only pop music I listen to these days is by The Beatles. Only Paul McCartney and John Lennon can ever be Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
Be yourself. Pick a direction and go.
By the way...writing country is no different than writing a lot of other types of music...it needs to tell a strong believable story that elicits an emotional response from the listener.
