I would like to share a poem I wrote a few years ago, but is so me. I came up with it when a very old woman came up to me on the side walk and said "Do you know you are going to hell?" Laughing a little inside I said "No, why am I going to hell?" "Because you have desecrated the lords temple with all your piercings and tattoos!" She looks so serious when she said this. I said "I'm not desecrating, I'm decorating!" well that made her mad of course, and she stomped off. Later I wrote this:
You look at me that way in disgust and disdain I’m pierced and tattooed I must be insane But who are you to judge when you kneel down and pray Just because our beliefs are not the same We are not so different you and I for we are all the same when we die
This is nothing against religion, simply against judging others without knowing them at all.

This is nothing against religion, simply against judging others without knowing them at all. Personally I am against religion, but not God. People condemn others, hate others, kill others, all in the name of God. Some can argue that religion does some good things, well so do many other organizations. It is the core that is rotten. Your response was excellent. I'm not a tattoo person myself, but what other people do is their business. If God has a problem with it, then it is between you and him. Great poem. We can find inspiration from many things.

Thank you. I couldn't agree more. Religion is corrupt, do as I say not as I do. People fight, kill, and die for their gods. I don't pretend to know more then any one, but if there is a god he weeps for this world. Thank you again!

Personally I am against religion, but not God. Yet churches dole out alms to the poor on a regular basis, they can't be all bad.

bad enough, though. the history of religion (especially "Western") is full of crime, murder and intolerance.
i would tend to think that "people" help other people. that is, unless they are fearful of censure by organized religion.
crowds (organizations, etc.) are very greedy, selfish beasts.
the poem above is a succinct statement, yet it lacks the 'luster' and depth available to a poet. even a brief poem can have depth, but this write stops way before delving into any textures, or images which would help a reader identify with anything more than its closing statement.
it may have been even more interesting if you explored the quip you present in your introduction: what is seen as desecration by one person is actually valued by another as a decorative celebration of life. try that one, eh?

Religions can do good works, but that doesn't mean they are good at the foundation. Governments give to the poor, that doesn't mean they are good. Zakat- Charity given to the poor. It is to be 2.5% of surplus wealth. That is for Muslims, yet look at how the Sunni and Shia murder each other, all based on their foundation. I just see the example provided here, as the result of someone's ignorance because of what she said. Same goes for the teetotalers in the bible belt. Jesus said it wasn't man's place to judge, and his first miracle was to produce wine after people had consumed the rest. I don't think much of the way man has manipulated people in the name of God, regardless of what good they do in the process. I'm not against the people in religion, unless they go out of their way to be annoying, or are trying to kill me unless I convert.

Richard- Very well said!
John- I understand what you are saying. It could be deeper, and this is not the first time I have heard that. However I have bin reluctant to change even one word because I wrote it over 5 years ago. I suppose I could write a new one using this poem as a base, and its not a bad idea. Thank you, I think I will do a new one. But this one will stay the way it is. I hope you will take a look when I post it. Thank you both for your contribution.
Christie Bremmer- I understand your need to defend your beliefs. But that is one of the problems with religion in general. I am not a church going person, I believe in fallowing my own path. A path I can lead as a good person. A path where I can dress the way I want, act the way I want, live the way I want. All of this without fear of persacution, being shunned, emotionally or physically hurt, or even killed. Religion has been known to start wars (As has bin said), cause mass hysteria (Witch hunts), control through even manipulating the bible (Leaving books out because they didn't suite the purpose of the church)........ The list can go on and on, but three very good points.

I was raised on a reservation..when I was 9yo I lost my mother had to go live with my dad and his new wife, in her religion they knelt and prayed before plaster statues ...I would not..she beat me to my knees. more harm has been done by religion than I can imagine. when my father found out she had done that...I never went to, or had to go to church again. when I think of God, and Jesus I try to do what Jesus might have done. so I am hard to anger, and quick to forgive. I really like the poem.
