I imagine we've all had a bad neighbour at some time or another, and yes, it can be a nightmare. 
Moving so far out of the city that you have no immediate neighbours seems to be the answer, but not always. There have been horror stories about people who did just that only to realize their new home was near a snowmobile trail!!! The noise from those things all day long would be horrendous. I guess the onus is on us to be super careful about just what is in the neighbourhood before we buy.
