Welcome, Liz. With so many authors self-publishing today, promotion becomes essential. It's something that many of us don't have any experience in. After all, promotion was something done by our publishers, all we had to do was write. Ah for the good old days. But now that we are the publishers: editors, cover artists, etc., promotion becomes our responsibility.
