It usually doesn't take long for the U.S. to follow in the U.K.'s footsteps.

For some reason I doubt this access will be limited to tracking crime or criminal behavior.

This was inevitable, really. There are so many abuses on the Internet people have been demanding it be controlled. But it is a double-edged sword. As you say, it won't only be "criminal" activity that is monitored. The UK, incidentally, is very heavily policed. They have more surveillance cameras than China and for a much smaller population.
