I am in need of some punctuation assistance here...
Pretty please and thanks.
“You know I did everything I could but, in the end I had to kill her.” The man slunk further down in the chair.
“Tell me everything.” The Sheriff slid a pack of cigarettes to the prisoner.
“Just read me my rights, nothing really matters any more.” He took the pack of cigarettes off the table top, shakily removing one. Bringing it to his lips, he looked to the man across the table waiting for a light.
“Try me.” He spoke softly as he struck the match and leaned across touching the tip of the flame to the tobacco.
“She made me promise to kill her. I loved her … but, a promise… an oath that is something I could not break. Once the curse was cast there was no turning back.” he took a long drag from the cigarette seemingly unaware of the ashes that threatened to fall.
“Wauthier, what curse?”
“The unspeakable curse,“ he paused “The only one punishable by death. Pride and anger, and perhaps even love or at least the loss of love were the motivating factors. She stopped feeling, her heart growing cold as ice.” He blew tendrils of smoke as he spoke.
“How long had you been with her?”
“Too long, not long enough… depends on who you ask and when. She bought me oh I don’t know maybe 100 years ago. My former master had a soul as cold as the back country, she took pity on me.
“Mistress was not all bad you have to understand that. She blamed her for her lot in life.” He motioned towards the picture on the table. “She took away her world. Just because she could.” he paused drawing from the half spent cigarette “For years she lay in bed. I did everything for her, it was like watching living death. Then one day she got up, her eyes gleaming speaking one word. ‘Revenge‘.”
“I’m new to these parts, I don’t know the back-story. Start from the top.”
The man signed “You see Red was supposed to die and Mistress was supposed to marry the Prince. None of that happened. Aurora saved Red, and the Prince fell in love with her, with her courage, and her other… talents.” He spat out the last word.
He moved towards the ash tray tapping lightly before he spoke again. “Mistress was heart broken, she had secretly loved Prince Edward for fifty years. When the messenger came with the proposal she was elated. As fate would have it, as with most things it was a blessing and a curse. Her father agreed to the union. Paid all that they had as dowry and the contract was signed.
“Then Little miss perfect just had to go and stick her nose in where it didn‘t belong“. He sneered, smashing the cigarette out on the picture of the smiling princess. “I don’t know the whys or how but, somehow Red found out about the planed attack in the forest. She rode off to prevent it, successfully. Word spread once Red started screaming the story to any who would listen.
“Prince Edward being the curious fellow he is just had to throw a Masquerade ball and invite her as the guest of honor. Mistress was not pleased… It was breach of protocol, never has a Prince thrown a party with a commoner as the main guest without first going through his betrothed.
“The night of the party Prince Edward and ‘Princess’ Aurora danced, laughed and, shared more than was proper. If you ask me she is nothing more than a harlot. She will destroy this kingdom, mark my words. Her and the brats she birthed. You call them ‘royalty‘, I say they are filth dressed in fine cloth.” his anger rose as he spoke.
“Yes, she set the unspeakable the curse lose, but she was only trying to right the wrongs done. Edward leaving her at the alter, her father dying in poverty, the shame she had to wear as the whole kingdom looked down on her. When she failed, foiled again by “true love” I did as promised… I Killed my Mistress. That is what she wanted. Rather than live knowing that her life was in ruins while Aurora is feasting in the castle, sleeping with her husband, living her life.
“Put me to death… what is done is done. Mistress found a powerful curse, one that will bring heartache and pain to all who live. None shall escape it’s grasp. Mistress will be avenged. Her death sets the last curse free. It’s coming for you all. There’s nothing you can do about it! He smirked at the stunned sheriff.
