Author criticized for writing a heart wrenching memoir with a scandalous title.
The title of the book is “I Told My Mind To Shut The F*ck Up,” and it is about a man whose wife and son were simultaneously diagnosed with multiple tumors. The diagnosis sent him into a state of panic, but Winick, who had spent a lifetime overcoming obstacles, uses everything he ever learned to calmly and steadily guide his family. From a troubled youth to a successful entrepreneur and teacher, Winick acquired a New Age perspective for defeating the demons of his mind and navigating his life and family toward positive outcomes. Thanks to it, he was able to empower himself to achieve financial independence, support his wife through two decades of serious surgical procedures, and help his son fight to survive one of the most complicated neurological surgeries in medical history.
Greg Winick, an English teacher with a Masters degree in Education, professional magician and inspirational speaker, tells his critics, “Many people are emailing me about how my title is offensive. I tell them this book helps patients and their families dealing with Cancer and chronic illness who are often tormented by their minds. It also helps those who perceive lesser difficulties as serious problems. It’s not my intention to offend anyone, only to point out the option of not being controlled by persistent negative thoughts that tend to fill your head during a crisis. In fact the ‘F’ word is rarely used throughout the book, but believe me, most fathers and husbands, if their minds were telling them over and over again that their wife and son were going to die, they might just tell their minds to shut the f*ck up too.”
In recent years, several books with curse words in their titles have worked their way onto best-seller lists. Sh*t My Dad Says, by Justin Halpern, based on colorful comments made by his father and Adam Mansbach’s off-color picture book, Go the F— to Sleep both became international sensations. Maybe, all it really takes to find a spot on the "New York Times Bestseller List” is a nasty word in the title, but according to reviews of the book so far, Winick’s memoir is a compelling, inspirational journey that’s impossible to put down.
