Since I have started my classes I have managed to prove two things.
1) It's been a long time since I had to study anything and boy am I rusty.
2) People really are as stupid as they look.
Number one is just a matter of getting back into practice.
Number two I say this because In this class we have to practice medical procedures on one another. Which sounds perfectly fine in theory and with some extra precautions on my part I should be fine. Right? I mean I know what has to be done to protect myself from other peoples germs... But what kills me and this is where I find the stupidity.
I had open heart surgery when I was 14.
Now here of late my heart has been giving me issues like it used to. I'm tired all the time, I get every cold bug known to man etc etc. It's not as bad as it was back then but I know the time is coming when my Doc is going to tell me I need a new one. That is a fact I have lived with for a long time.
It's kind of why I do exactly what I want when I want. I have no idea how much time I have left. I have lived with that fun fact since my 14Th birthday.
So anyhow in class we were practicing blood draws, I told the director of the school that Anyone who was going to be invading my body MUST be extra extra careful.
This means wearing gloves, and a face mask, making sure to clean the puncture site carefully before the stick, as well as placing a bandage over the site as soon as you have finished. An infection in the blood can kill me with in as little as six hours.
Now the teacher was never told about the requirements. So when I asked where the masks were she gave me a funny look and asked "why?" So I go through the very long story once again detailing the conditions that still exist. Finally she points me in the direction of where the masks "should be." I grab the whole box because I have no idea how many people will be coming close to me.
I hand a mask to the first person and they did not want to wear it. She said "It's not in the book, I don't have to wear that!" So I explain to her (mind you English is not her first language) that I suffer from a distended aortic branch, an enlarged heart (x3) as well as a compromised mitral valve. Paper thin ventricular walls that leak like a sive just to name a few. I go further because she still looks confused, mind you this is a medical class...
And tell her an infection can kill me rather quickly and that I will not allow her to stick me unless she puts the mask on before she begins her practice.
So she turns and asks the teacher if she "HAS TO..." NO! you nit-wit you don't have to do anything... walk into a TB room without a mask because you don't want to mess up your makeup. I double dog dare you. But, I will not let you stick me!
The teacher tells her yes she does. She puts the mask on but leaves her nose uncovered. Rolling her eyes the whole time. I politely ask her to cover her nose and she mutters something in a language I don't understand takes her gloved hands and fixes the mask. Then tries to "clean" the site before selecting the area she needs with now dirty gloves...
I asked her to change her gloves and more cussing this time in my language. I stand up. Now I am angry, I don't want to get sick or die because this moron won't follow simple universal precautions. Which IS in the flipping book BTW had she bothered to read the dang thing.
Finally the prof sends the proctor over to oversee this fiasco.
The proctor walks her through the WHY's and HOW's I'm cool... the chick plunges the needle into my arm and misses the vein, she tries digging around with it with no luck and gives up. Rather than try a second time. She walks away and does not put an bandage over the wound...
By the end of this whole episode with her I can't help but feel mad. I'm mad because the school should tell her to quit while she can still get her money back. There is no way this person can pass this class. She can't follow simple directions that her "patient" is giving her that would protect the patient from serious harm, and or illness/death. She can't hit a vein so she just gives up... and leaves the wound uncovered on a high risk pt no less. I mean really now! She is obviously not cut out for an accelerated class. End of story. But, I am even more upset with the director. The Professor should have had the important information about my condition long before I stepped a foot into that lab.
To top off everything the Prof signed her sheet saying she had correctly preformed the procedure! WT(&** (^&^$! You have to be kidding me...
Like I said sometimes people really are just as stupid as they look.
