Hey, I hope you don't mind that I started the thread today? Just ready to get this off my plate before a busy night.
Mother May I
A simple game
played on a sidewalk
between a brother and sister.
A son and a daughter
to their parents
who wait at the end with instructions.
They're easy to follow.
You're told what to do,
but you must ask Mother may I,
before making a move.
The son goes first
he's oldest of the two.
Son,
take three steps towards becoming a football star.
Mother may I?
He asks.
Yes you may.
And away he goes
three steps ahead.
Daughter,
take three steps towards becoming an artist,
Mother may I?
She asks.
No you may not
that's just a silly dream,
they respond with a frown.
So Daughter remains
three steps behind.
Son,
take five leaps
towards college
with the football scholarship you'll receive.
Mother may I?
He asks.
Yes you may
their eyes fill with tears,
and away he goes
five leaps ahead.
Daughter,
take five leaps
towards college
where you'll become classically trained as an artist.
Mother may I?
She asks.
No you may not
that's a silly hobby,
so Daughter remains
three steps and five leaps behind.
Son,
take ten giant hops
towards getting your masters,
then a doctorate in divinity
and you'll lead a church of millions
to our Lord Jesus Christ,
the ultimate sacrifice.
Mother may I?
He asks
Yes you may
they beam,
and away he goes
ten giant hops ahead
reaching the end
where their outstretched arms await.
Daughter waits patiently
for her instructions,
but they never come.
She finally asks,
Mother may I
what can I do?
Daughter,
take three steps
five leaps
and ten giant hops
towards getting married,
and having babies,
isn't that what you've always wanted?
Of course, you're right,
it was silly for me to think
I could be anything more,
Mother may I?
Daughter asks.
Yes you may.
