There are tons of yahoo groups out there! Once you join one, it seems like they find you.
Here are some places to check out for promotional opportunities:
When you're like me, and you don't have a lot of time to do this - because
it can be quite time consuming - you can use a promotion service for very
little money. Topaz Productions is a good one. For around $30 they will take
your book and promote it to a couple of hundred Yahoo Groups twice a week
for a month. That represents a lot of time to you so it's well worth the
money. This is their link
www.topazpromos.com/Also Honey Bee Promotions is a new service. I’ve personally used them and they were quick and efficient—and also cheap!
honeybeepromotions.comAnother way to promote your book is by being a guest on different blogs.
Many of your fellow authors have personal blogs they invite guests on. Go
through the names and bring up their sites - a lot of them have Contact Me
Pages and just drop them a line and ask if they have openings soon for a
guest. You can do a simple interview and promote your book, or actually
write a short article on any subject and then promote your book.
If you don't already have one, get a Facebook page. You will be surprised at
how fast your friends list grows as people learn about your book. You can
also go to some of your favorite authors and read down their list of
friends - send people Friendship Requests even if you don't know them. Just
make sure your page tells all about your being a writer - and don't use your
real name - only your writer's name. Use the Facebook to promote your book
and yourself. Without being too intrusive, be a little personal. Fans love
to know a little bit about the person who writes the words they love to
read.
Make sure you Twitter - it's the singles bar of the century and a LOT of
people read those tweets. Get on at least once daily and post anything -
just a line to say you had a good day if nothing else. The point is to keep
your name out there.
Set up a professional page with LinkedIn - Join a lot of their chat groups with other authors and readers
When your book makes it to Amazon set up an author page with them - it's
also free - here's the link for that.
authorcentral.amazon.com/Make use of the groups they have there.
www.kindleboards.com/index.phpYou can join several that allow you
to talk about your Amazon books and let you review and rate others. Also
sign up for their Associate's Program and become an affiliate - that way you
can put their special link on your site to your book and you'll earn an
extra percentage anytime someone uses that link to go in and buy your book -
they pay it to you quarterly.
Manic Readers has a place to set up a free author page now where you can
display all of your book covers and even ask for reviews - here's the link -
www.manicreaders.com/index.cfmBookworm Bags is a great way to get promotional material
out to the public if you can't find time or afford to attend
conferences.
bookwormbags.com/author-information/Fresh Fiction Register is a free place to register your books
and expose your writing to new readers.
freshfiction.com/register.phpThis is a great site for free - you can publicize your book
istorytale.org/As you get more serious with promoting you may want to think about spending
a little more money to make it happen. You might want to think about Author Island - a
promotion group. They have many different rates. They promote the book on their site, host cyber release parties and advertise
them, host contests - set up blogs - and have a posting board I can
promote any news I have to share with readers.
www.authorisland.com/Next - interviews and ads. All of the review sites - Dark Divas, Happily
Ever After...etc - have systems in place for author interviews and places to
buy ads to promote yourself. Each of their sites have someplace on them that
says "Request an Interview" - do as many as you can, just not all the same
week - space them out so your name is continually out there. The ads usually
run for 2-4 weeks are are as little as $5 - you can post your book cover,
and a link to the book's sale page for that price. The interviews can be
fun, and it gives the readers a way to learn more about you. If you can't
find any on your own let me know and I'll put together a list of a few.
Now, if you don't already have one a website is mandatory! Readers want to
think you're serious and professional and not someone who's just killing
time writing in your bunny slippers while the soap opera plays on the
television. Setting up a professional page can give them that illusion. It's
also a great tool to determine if the other things you're doing are working.
Websites can be free - although they usually look free when
they are - or they can be relative inexpensive and remember, everything you
do for your writing is tax deductible on your income taxes (here in the
states anyway). I personally like Bandoozle - it was originally for the
music industry but anyone can join. Their software is idiot proof - I'm
proof of that since I'd never done anything like that before and I set up
and maintain my own site. Please check it out and sign my guest book Once
you have one set up you can swap links with other authors - another way to
get your name out there and help out your fellow author in the process. If
you link on my site then everyone that looks at mine will also see you as
one of my favorite sites.
Another way to promote is by D. Renee Bagby's First Chapter Blog - she posts
your first chapter and the readers vote on the best at the end of the month.
It gets people interested in buying your book if they like reading the first
chapter - it's also free - here's the link
dreneebagbypresentsfirstchapters.blogspot.com/Joining The Romance Studio is also a great promotion too.
www.theromancestudio.com/blue/ For a small fee, I think it was
30.00 for 6 months, you become a Featured Member. It would give you a
chance to try their services to see if they improved your sales. From there
you can schedule your own release parties, set up chats or interviews,
participate in their parties and they have several a month. During the
parties you have unlimited posting to promote yourself, you can hold
contests and give away books or other items, and respond to the readers. At
the end of each party they provide you with a list of participants that
agreed to be put on mailing lists so you can start sending out your own
monthly news email. They have their book-a-day giveaways you
can donate pdf books to for promotion. All these things can be promoted
from your other sites as well. They have a lot of advertising available and
with being a Featured Member their prices are discounted - many ads for the
month are less than 10.00
Set up an author page at ARe -
www.arecafe.com/ You can promote
your books, and take advantage of their cheap ads - as little as 5.00 -
There are also groups you can join to have interaction with readers.
Set up a page with Romance Reviews -
erotic.theromancereviews.com/mypageprofile.php?location=missymartine They also have cheap ads and if you agree to display their link on your
website you get one free banner ad per month.
Join Goodreads and list your own books, as well as the ones you like to
read. Post reviews and join some of the groups so you can mingle with the
readers.
www.goodreads.com/Consider having promotional things made up. Vista Print is a great place to
do this.
www.vistaprint.com/vp/ns/default.aspx?xnav=welcomeback&xnid=removecookies&rd=2&GP=6%2f19%2f2011+4%3a19%3a22+PM&GPS=1578533617&GNF=1&GPLSID=Each time they send out an ad by email they offer free things. You can
always get one pen, one t-shirt, and many other free things and only pay
shipping which is very cheap as long as you don't want it fast. The prices
on things you buy is extremely reasonable. When they offer free postcards
it's always at least 50 and many times 100 - you can get free business
cards, rack cards, key chains, pens, mouse pads, tote bags, caps and
t-shirts, magnets, calendars. They have designs to choose from or for a
small fee - less than $5 you can have your book cover printed on them. They
make great prizes in contest, or give aways when you're doing a party.
Vista print does a free car door magnet that you can get and put on the side
of your car when you're driving - have your book cover put on it. Get some
business cards made up and leave them with your checks in restaurants, give
them to the cashier at the grocery and other retail stores.
Check with your
local used bookstores and see if they'll drop your business card, or maybe a
printed post card with a book cover and excerpt on it in the bags when
people buy books, get some t-shirts made up with your book covers and wear
them whenever you go out. Have the back of the shirt say "Ask Me About My
Books". Talk with local businesses that would attract a large crown on the
weekend - wineries, book stores, antique shops, and believe it or not, adult
book/novelty stores. Leave some printed material for them to hand out.
You can get some great, cheap pens here
