325 Americans were murdered with rifles last year, that's ALL rifles, not just so-called assault weapons. Just under 1700 Americans were murdered with knives. More Americans were killed last year with fists and feet than rifles. Why go after the VERY guns that would be useful against a tyrannical govt. and not handguns that were used in about 6500 murders last year? In the 60s and 70s, it was the cheap, small handguns they were after. Then there's the fact America's murder rate has dropped 50% in the last 20 years, bringing it down to a 50-year low. This happened while gun carry laws were relaxed and the number of guns in America doubled! Go to the FBI site and see that the UK has MORE violent crime per 100,000 people than the US, many times more. A woman is twice as likely to be raped in the UK as the US. So much of violent crime in the US is committed by black gangs, if not for the black crime problem, the US murder rate would be many, many times lower. In an interview, a woman from the Justice Department said that a young black man is 17 times more likely to commit murder than a young white man. The question of why is for another discussion, but it should be noted that the problem is most severe in Democrat-controlled areas with the strictest gun laws. Studies show that 78% of US murders are committed in only 3% of US counties! There are counties in the US that haven't had a murder in decades, even generations, and they happen to be in high gun ownership areas with the most lax gun laws.
A Harvard study of European countries, comparing those with the highest gun-owning rates with those that had the lowest, showed the opposite of what gun banners claim: The countries with the highest gun owning rates had LOWER violent crimes rates, including murder. (The UK is listed by the EU as the most violent nation in Europe and by the UN as the most violent society in the western world, yes, higher than the US and even South Africa!) You can Google all of this and go to the FBI site for the crime stats. Harvard didn't like the results of their study, since they are gun banners, too, but published the results anyway.
