But that's what I'm here for. When I mean I wanted 'no drama,' I meant it because it was a constant waste of time.
You'd sign on, then deal with the problem or the dust-up of the day. The problem du jour. If there was time, we'd discuss our stories.
I wound up discusssing ideas and solving plot problems more on the members' e-mails than I did in the open forum. In fact, two of those women and I still exchange e-mails and help me polish chapters.
Don't forget, I'm an older guy, the "new media" to me just means 'the same whiny kids.' When I ask a member about a problem I've having on chapter three, a response of "are you on FaceBook" doesn't help.
At the end there were threads simply linking to members' blogs. Yikes, I really ticked a guy off when he realized I thought we were on an open forum.
I'll bet he yelled so loud his mom heard him upstairs, and that was with the dryer running in his bedroom...

Any threads that get "dramatic" are moved over to our blog, where the discussion can continue, uncensored. This has helped keep the forum focused on writing, while not resorting to heavy handed moderation in order to achieve it. At the end of the day, this strategy keeps everyone happy, or we hope that it does. ;D

Okay, fair enough. I'd like to get a start in the right direction and be a good, contributing member. I would guestimate that my story is 2/3s finished, some re-writes, but with a completed and definite arc. I do have a collaborator I brought in to help develop my female characters. She has sold a story and is now working on the screenplay.
Since things are pretty definite, and it's "refinement" I need, how should I enter this forum?
Should I contribute to reviews? Print sections of the story? Seek out similar writers and discuss specifics off the open forum?
When you're a new(er) guy with a bad taste in his mouth, how do you do the right thing?

Well we don't stand on ceremony here and there are very few rules. You're more than welcome to post up to 200 words of your story in the Critiques section, and it would be great if you critiqued the work of others work as well.

If you don't like a forum the solution is easy, log off and don't go back.

Some administrators encourage controversy because it creates more activity on the forum. But that's not the right kind of activity, and eventually only the nasty members remain because no one else will post there, and the forum is finished. Nobody wants to participate on a forum where they're subjected to accusations that they're a former member (paranoia run wild) and to personal attacks. I don't care who's who here, that's the nature of the Internet. A writers forum should be about writers helping other writers in a supportive environment. But hey, that's pretty hard, if not impossible, to find.! I could not agree more. It helps that this place is small enough to police effectively for trouble. I like it here, and I'm glad to be a part of the "team" so should anyone need anything please do not hesitate to let me know if Lily or Rich are not about. I check in here a few times a day. Enjoy, ~BL~

I believe every member has a right to edit or delete his posts, indefinitely, and to cancel his account if and when he so chooses. This forum was started by a few of us, who were refugees from a pretty awful site. There had been no moderation in years (literally) and this allowed a very nasty forum gang to take root. They would go as far as to stalk members who stood up to them, trying to find out their real identity, and make death threats. Then when the site changed ownership, the moderator was a little Hitler and terribly unfair. Fortunately, she didn't last, and the new mods cleaned house and banned the forum gang, who have started up a forum of their own where they continue their nastiness. One senses a huge frustration and anger in people like that, which they vent in the relative anonymity of the Net. Wow that is truly stranger than fiction! A cyber gang, stalking, death threats, AND a little Hitler :0 Ha! i'm glad I'm here. I can't see a moderator named Lily who has a cute little picture of a cat in a sunhat as her avatar ever becoming dictatorial.

It's now defunct. They were a real nasty crowd.

What went on at that other forum was so bizarre, you almost have to have been there to believe it. Glad you like it here.
