(Edited for length and needless content ) I guess my question is this: what do you guys prefer? Do you like stories where you're just dropped into the action, and you have to accept thing as you go? Or do you prefer being told how it is, so you know exactly what's going on before you even meet the characters? I'm leaning towards the former approach, but my head is just a little muddled right now. I suppose I'm looking to you guys to help me clear it XP

I prefer being just dropped into the action. They can fill in the back story later on. Too much of a lead in before anything happens tends to bore the reader. Prologues can work like a charm for this, also.

I agree with Lily 100% I'm not a pro like her, but I jump right into a scene if it's in my head. Get it on paper so to speak. You will have to go back and re-write some things later. But I write what's come to me and then build forward or backwards! Good luck.

I'm with the full-of-action start too :-) I agree that the backstory can be filled in gradually later on.
It happened with my current MS. I was told that it began too slowly, too descriptively. So I ended up with starting it from the chapter 5 and filling in the gaps from the pprevious 4 chapters as flashbacks here and there. Action rules :-P

I love getting into the action straight away. Back story? Tell me later, but break it up. Too much info tends to bore me sometimes.

I don't know. Sometimes you have to worm up the car before you slam it into drive and hit the gas.
It would be easy to trap yourself if your not careful. You would have to start with your foot on the gas and not let up...much like the movie Speed...because if you let it slow down at all then people will jump off.
You'd have to watch your length I think. You'd want to be on the lower end of the average novel length.
It has been done with quite a bit of success...Hollywood action movies are a testament to their success.
I'm sure there has to be some literary examples out there. It's not my bag of cookies though.
