In another thread I mentioned that I felt any action I might take under certain circumstances would open me up to society's vilification. Then again, I live in "The Peoples' Republik of Madison." I was arrested once on a misdemeanor, and yet found the story on the front page of our local paper in an outlined box--three years after it happened. They do not forgive here if you thumb your nose at liberals.
Paranoids have real enemies, too. But the reason I bring it up is an exchange of e-mails I have received from a woman in Canada. Now, she's a buddy, she's helping me with dialog on my book.
However, we butt heads over ObamaBilk, CCW issues, large V-style motors, etc. I'm a conservative and she doesn't know any better. LOL.
And while I joke about that, this is a real condition. I have always lived free, and demanded it. And not just from society as a whole, but from my parents, my professors, bartenders, drunken townies and even doctors. In fact, if I had to do it all over again I'd live even larger.
Hence, the topic of this thread. I have found that no matter what I do, modern society is going to vilify the actions. In fact, I'm not sure I approve of my friend's stance on disarming herself. In the long run I feel it makes predators even bolder.
I don't believe we have educated, adult debates with well constructed postulates and well thought-out rebuttals. We have attacks, and failing that, we hostilely attack our opponent, falsely believing that knocking him down elevates us.
Granted, I've done more (and continue to do) to tick off my learned opposition than just about anyone. In fact, 'tweaking idiots' is an enjoyable past-time. But the fact remains, in speaking in/on the diplomatic lubrication of society, is vilification necessary, or now the "new normal"?
